As an employee of the Statistics Department in the Lodz Ghetto, Ross frequenty undertook graphic-design projects. In 1960, he revisited his photographs while working on the book The Last Journey of the Jewa of Lodz. Ross fixated on the image of a young boy who stands out among the residents trudging through snow to deportation at the Radogoszcz station.
He made many modified versions of the photograph, with varying crops and views, and used it to create photomontage compositions. The anguish of the young boy is symbolic of the tragedy Ross captured in his documentation of the Jews of Lodz.
